About our Short Courses

In addition to our BA honours and certified Pro Tools training programmes, we offer an exciting range of short courses. All courses are taught in small groups of 6 - 10 in a professional environment to ensure each delegate will get as much out of the course as possible. To make it easy for you to find the course you require, the courses are titled according to their duration: 'Introduction' courses are 1 day. 'Essentials' courses are 2 days. 'Music production' and the Advanced Studio Recording courses are 10 weeks. Essentials of Surround Sound Surround sound has long been the format of choice in the film and gaming industries. More recently it has been taken up seriously in pure music recording with new releases, DVDs, and older albums being re-released in 5.1. This 2 day course is designed to introduce the concepts and practical techniques needed for engineers to make the jump from stereo to 5.1. Various techniques are examined including easy ways to create pseudo surround, through stem mixing and full remixing in 5.1. The use of panning, EQ, and surround effects plug-ins are explored. Comparisons with stereo are reinforced throughout. Use of Digidesign's Pro Tools to set up a 5.1 session is also covered. Essentials of Live Sound and PA This 2 day course is designed to give delegates a thorough grounding in the essential aspects of PA engineering and Live Sound. This is most useful for those dealing with sound reinforcement in clubs, theatres, music and conference venues. The course assumes delegates have some basic knowledge of common studio terminology and practice. This knowledge is further developed and applied specifically to a PA environment. Both the theory and practice of PA systems are covered. Delegates will also set up a small rig, balance the system and experiment with outboard equipment. Advanced Studio Recording This detailed 10 week evening course provides a comprehensive grounding in all the important principles and techniques employed in studio recording and mixing. Taught from scratch it assumes little or no previous knowledge and is therefore suitable for complete beginners, or those with a basic understanding who want to supplement their existing knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of the subject. Topics covered include:mixing desks, multitrack media, dynamics processors, time based effects, microphone types and placement, and mixing techniques. Automation and synchronisation of MIDI systems are also covered. Delegates have plenty of time to learn and practice recording and mixing skills on a wide range of professional equipment. The final few weeks are spent recording and mixing a live ensemble which may consist of a range of acoustic and electronic instruments. Duration: 10 Weeks.
